Harry Potter Fanfiction: Why it’s wrong

J.K. Rowling, author of Harry Potter, has made it abundantly clear that she is transphobic. It has been years since she started to basically attack the trans community. Here is a brief timeline (source: https://theweek.com/feature/1020838/jk-rowlings-transphobia-controversy-a-complete-timeline):

2018: Rowling ‘likes’ an anti-trans tweet, claims it was an “accident”.
She was called out for ‘liking’ a tweet that referred to trans women as “men in dresses”. Her spokesperson said that it was an accident; “I’m afraid Rowling has a clumsy and middle-aged moment and this is not the first time she has favorited by holding her phone incorrectly.”
She later said she “absent-mindedly” liked the tweet when she meant to screenshot it because she had taken “an interest in gender identity and transgender matters.”
What fucking bullshit excuses.

2019: Rowling follows ‘self-professed transphobe’ on Twitter.
She faced backlash after following Magdalen Berns (YouTuber), a “self-professed transphobe” who made videos with titles such as “there is no such thing as a lesbian with a penis”. Rowling admitted she followed Berns, an “immensely brave young feminist and lesbian who was dying of an aggressive brain tumor,” because she “wanted to contact her directly.”

2019: Rowling stands with researcher who lost contract over anti-trans statements.
Rowling came to the defense of Maya Forstater, who was waging an employment discrimination battle when her contract wasn’t renewed after she made a series of anti-trans statements. These statements included that people should not be “compelled to play along with literal delusions like ‘transwomen are women,’” and she referred to a genderfluid person as a “man who likes to dress in women’s clothes.”
Rowling tweeted she stood with Forstater, “Dress however you please. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?”
Newsflash buddy, sex is different from gender.

2020: Rowling likes another controversial tweet.
She liked another tweet that misgendered psychotherapist and photographer Alex Drummond and described her as “an adult human male who claims to be a lesbian (yes, he’s kept his dangling bits and skipped the hormones).”
Guess what? Trans people don’t need to medically transition to be valid human beings! Hope that helps!

2020: Rowling published essay defending her stance as actors speak out.
She published an over 3,600 word essay on her website. In it, she said she is “worried about the new trans activism” and “the huge explosion in young women wishing to transition and also about the increasing numbers who seem to be detransitioning” (among other things).
Actors from the Harry Potter franchise began to speak out against Rowling, such as Daniel Radcliffe (tweet: “Transgender women are women.”), Emma Watson (“trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are”), and Eddie Redmayne (“trans women are women, trans men are men and nonbinary identities are valid).

2020: Critics suggest Rowling’s new novel is anti-trans.
Her pseudonym is Robert Galbraith. There is a psychiatrist by the name of Robert Galbraith Heath who did experiments in deep brain stimulation as a way to “cure” homosexuality. This seems like too much of a coincidence that a transphobic author picks the pseudonym Robert Galbraith to publish books under…
Anyway, the book titled “Troubled Blood” follows a male serial killer who dresses like a woman to kill. Once again, too much of a coincidence a transphobe would write this…

2022: Rowling criticizes bill that would make legally changing gender easier.
Rowling condemned a bill in Scotland that would make it easier for trans people to legally change their gender. Rowling tweeted that the bill would “harm the most vulnerable women in society: those seeking help after male violence/rape and incarcerated women.”

2022: Rowling published a book about a character being accused of transphobia.
“The Ink Black Heart” follows a fictional YouTube creator, Edie Ledwell, who is accused of being transphobic.
I mean, this just screams self-inserted fanfiction from Rowling…

2024: Rowling targets Scotland’s new hate crime law.
Scotland’s new Hate Crime and Public Order Act went into effect in April 2024, Rowling tried to bait them to arrest her with posts online. The law criminalizes “stirring up hatred” against people based on their race, religion, disability, sexuality, or gender identity. By passing the law, Scotland “placed higher value on the feelings of men performing their idea of femaleness, however misogynistically or opportunistically, than on the rights and freedoms of actual women and girls,” Rowling said in a thread on Twitter.
I mean, come the fuck on?

2024: Rowling donates £70,000 to the anti-trans group For Women Scotland (https://www.thepinknews.com/2024/02/19/jk-rowling-for-women-scotland-donation-legal-definition-woman/).
The donation was made to support their legal challenge regarding the definition of “woman” in Scottish law. The Supreme Court ultimately ruled that trans women are not considered women under the nation’s Equality Act.
This is where your money is going when you buy licensed Harry Potter merch or go to The Wizarding World. You are ACTIVELY GIVING HER MONEY TO SUPPORT TRANSPHOBIC LAWS.

This is just a brief rundown of JK Rowling’s transphobia. She has made it abundantly clear where she stands on trans rights. She actively celebrated the Equality Act not recognizing trans women.

When I see people posting about Harry Potter or Harry Potter Fanfiction, you are showing me you value a book series over human lives. Let’s not forget that these transphobic laws also harm cis women.

Now, why do I think Harry Potter Fanfiction turned Traditionally Published books are wrong and should not still exist?:
1. By rewriting HP fanfic, you can never completely remove the original material. It will always be tied to HP. No amount of rewrites will ever make the work fully original source material, because you are rewriting a fanfiction. It is impossible to have a fanfiction turn into fully original work that you came up with. It will be TIED to HP.

2. By promoting these fanfictions turned trad books, you are STILL keeping HP and JKR relevant. You are showing JKR that people are willing to read fanfics based on her series. You are giving her a platform to spew her hateful transphobia that is actively harming people.

3. Keeping HP and JKR relevant in times like this, where her views are quite frankly fucking open for anyone to see, she will always use the money she gets from HP to fund anti-trans organizations. She already has, and will continue to do so with royalties. Reading HP, HP fanfics, and talking about them will keep her relevant and in the spotlight. To stop this cycle, readers HAVE TO STOP RECOMMENDING THEM. Even stop reading them to show a decline in people willing to read things based on her work.

I have posted about this on my Instagram stories many times, but thought it would be best to have a page on my website for easy access. I have started to unfollow people I see posting about HP fanfics because frankly, fuck that. Fuck HP, fuck HP fanfics, and most importantly, JKR is a transphobic piece of shit.

Also, can we just stop for a second and question why people want to read a book (Dramoine fanfiction in particular) about a literal Nazi? Why is it so fucking popular? WHY do you want to read that? That’s pretty fucking gross…

As for the HP fanfics turned trad books that are being published this year:
The Irresistible Urge to Fall For Your Enemy by Brigitte Knightley
Alchemised by SenLinYu
Rose in Chains by Julie Soto

As a trans person, it’s disappointing AND frustrating to see people posting about HP fanfics who are supposed to be “trans allies.” Sorry, but no, if you post anything HP related, I don’t see you as a trans ally. JKR is a piece of shit.
